LIDAR - Laser Imaging Detection And Ranging

NASA's Phoenix Mars mission is the first of NASA's Mars Scout missions, and represents a massive collaboration of government, academia and industry. Exploring the Martian arctic region, Phoenix will help scientists answer the following questions:

  • Can the Martian arctic support life?
  • What is the history of water at the landing site?
  • How is the Martian climate affected by polar dynamics?

MET
Built by the Canadian Space Agency

B-Con Engineering - LIDAR NASA Phoenix Mars Mission

The Canadian Space Agency was responsible for building the Phoenix Mars polar lander Meteorological Station (MET). The MET will look at daily and seasonal variations of temperature and pressure, measure wind speed, and examine clouds and atmospheric dust.

To help with design and construction of the MET, the agency turned to some of the leading academic and industrial organizations in Canada. B-Con was asked to contribute design and manufacturing of laser imaging detection and ranging (LIDAR) components and assemblies.

LIDAR
B-Con's Contribution to Phoenix

B-Con Engineering - LIDAR NASA Phoenix Mars Mission

LIDAR will be used to examine clouds and atmospheric dust. LIDAR transmits laser light into the atmosphere and measures reflected light to determine the size and location of atmospheric particles. This information will help NASA scientists determine how energy flows within the polar atmosphere, and give them a better understanding of Martian weather.
